Members
Lee Carmon, a founding member of the Classic City Band and the Athens Flute Choir, received her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from UGA where she studied with Betty Bennett. She was accepted to Temple University to pursue a Masters in Flute Performance but decided to take a year off to work in the political world of Washington, DC. This was followed by a stint in business school but when vexed by statistics, she decided to pursue a law degree. Lee practiced law for 35 years while maintaining an active music “career” as Principal flute with the Athens Symphony for 24 years, 15 years and counting with the Athens Flute Choir, substitute flute with the Northern Virginia Community Orchestra, as well as various gigs throughout Northeast Georgia. Recently retired, Lee divides her time between her music, her volunteer work with beagle rescue, and her dog treat business, Best Friends Biscuits.
Beth Crull, a retired speech/language pathologist, has played the flute since the fifth grade. After college, years passed before she picked up her flute again joining the Classic City Band for several seasons. Another lull lasting many more years passed before she learned about the AFC. Playing with the AFC has been a fun and positive experience. When not “fluting” Beth enjoys spending time with friends, her dogs, and traveling. She recently purchased a camper van to travel across the U.S.
Carol Horne started her musical education on piano, (adding accordion, ukulele, song flute, drum pad, and bugle) and was able to start flute in the 5th grade. She took advantage of all of the opportunities offered through the Georgia public schools. While attending college at Agnes Scott, she played with the Emory-Atlanta Chamber Orchestra, then graduated in music therapy from Florida State University. She eventually found her way to the Atlanta Flute Ensemble, then to the Athens Symphony where she has played second flute for many years. When the call went out to form the Athens Flute Choir, Carol became a founding member, enthusiastically playing alto flute and arranging music for the group.
Audrey Huff first picked up a flute at age 10, and since that time has been a member of various musical groups, including community bands. She studied several years with Flutist, Cara Gauldin. She feels privileged to be a long-term member of Athens Flute Choir, which continues to be her preferred group for both musical expression and camaraderie. Audrey hopes to be an example to her children in keeping music a part of her daily life, alongside a career and family. She is a Family Physician in Winder, Georgia where she lives with her husband, two children and a farm full of animals.
Marty Tanner Hughes is a retired UGA librarian. She picked up the flute in fourth grade, and except for a brief hiatus in graduate school, has been playing in bands ever since. She switched to piccolo for marching band in high school and at Miami University (of Ohio). At Miami, she got her first taste of alto flute in a flute choir, and when Athens Flute Choir offered an opportunity to try bass flute, she jumped at the chance. Marty has been a member of the Classic City Band since moving to Athens in 1985.
Briana Parbus has been a flute hobbyist for 18+ years, and was previously a member of the largest community orchestra in America (Central Florida Community Arts). Briana found Athens Flute Choir shortly after moving to Georgia and has been very grateful for what this group brings to her life. Outside of music, Briana pays the bills as an Environmental Engineer and plays roller derby for Classic City Roller Derby.
